Summary: In this brilliant work, the most influential philosopher since Sartre suggests that such vaunted reforms as the abolition of torture and the emergence of the modern penitentiary have merely shifted the focus of punishment from the prisoner's body to his soul. Spanning eight topical areas, its articles are united by a single idea: technological change has been a constant companion to changes in society, ethics, energy, the environment, population, conflict, the third world, health, and even the future. This approach includes descriptions and full-color artwork that depict evolutionary changes in the structure and function of selected organ systems.

It is an analysis of the social and theoretical mechanisms behind the changes that occurred in Western penal systems during the modern age based on historical documents from France. Foucault argues that prison did not become the principal form of punishment just because of the humanitarian concerns of reformists. He traces the cultural shifts that led to the predominance of prison via the body and power. Prison used by the "disciplines" — new technological powers that can also be found, according to Foucault, in places such as schools, hospitals, and military barracks. In a later work, Security, Territory, Population , Foucault admitted that he was somewhat overzealous in his argument that disciplinary power conditions society; he amended and developed his earlier ideas.

Pick up the key ideas in the book with this quick summary. It might not seem obvious at first glance why prisons are so important. After all, they are an integral and accepted part of our legal system. They just seem so unremarkable. But of course, that is not the case. As Michel Foucault argues, only a few hundred years ago, the picture was different.

In his revolutionary work on control and power relations in our public institutions, Michel Foucault argues that the development of prisons, police organizations and legal hierarchies has merely changed the focus of domination from our bodies to our souls. Even schools, factories, barracks and hospitals, in which an individual's time is controlled hour by hour, are part of a disciplinary society. Discipline and Punish is clearly a tour de force Foucault's genius is called forth into eloquent clarity of his passions Michel Foucalt was one of the leading intellectuals of the twentieth century and the most prominent thinker in post-war France. Foucault's work influenced disciplines as diverse as history, sociology, philosophy, sociology and literary criticism.

Foucault, Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison, Summary and Notes

Discipline and Punish is a history of the modern penal system. Foucault seeks to analyze punishment in its social context, and to examine how changing power relations affected punishment. He begins by analyzing the situation before the eighteenth century, when public execution and corporal punishment were key punishments, and torture was part of most criminal investigations. Punishment was ceremonial and directed at the prisoner's body. It was a ritual in which the audience was important. Public execution reestablished the authority and power of the King. Popular literature reported the details of executions, and the public was heavily involved in them.
