Transverse waves commonly occur in elastic solids; the oscillations in this case are the displacement of the solid particles away from their relaxed position, in directions perpendicular to the propagation of the wave. Since those displacements correspond to a local shear deformation of the material, a transverse wave of this nature is called a shear wave.

In a longitudinal wave, the propagation of energy is in the direction of the motion, while in a transverse wave the propagation of energy is perpendicular to the direction of motion. A longitudinal wave is a wave that moves in the direction that it was started. It has a compression increased intensity of the medium particles and a rarefaction a reduction of intensity.
