A critical description is given of standard methods of testing adhesives, both destructively and non-destructively. They are often rigid and brittle; hence, impact resistance and peel strength are poor. The Handbook of Adhesive Technology, Second Edition exceeds the ambition of its bestselling forerunner by reexamining the mechanisms driving adhesion, categories of adhesives, techniques for bond formation and evaluation, and major industrial applications.

Sealant is a substance used to block the passage of fluids through the surface or joints or openings in materials, a type of mechanical seal. In building construction sealant is sometimes synonymous with caulking and also serve the purposes of blocking dust, sound and heat transmission. Sealants may be weak or strong, flexible or rigid, permanent or temporary. Sealants are not adhesives but some have adhesive qualities and are called adhesive-sealants or structural sealants. Sealants were first used in prehistory in the broadest sense as mud, grass and reeds to seal dwellings from the weather such as the daub in wattle and daub and thatching. Natural sealants and adhesive-sealants included plant resins such as pine pitch and birch pitch , bitumen , wax , tar , natural gum , clay mud mortar, lime mortar , lead , blood and egg. In the 17th century glazing putty was first used to seal window glass made with linseed oil and chalk, later other drying oils were also used to make oil-based putties which were often referred to as caulks.

Starch—a component of almost every plant—has long been used as an adhesive. According to literature, the ancient Egyptians used a starch adhesive as a bonding agent in the making of papyrus. Starch is a natural polymeric product, making it a good adhesive. But borate additives can significantly improve its adhesive qualities. For many industrial applications, the natural tack of starch is too slow, and its viscosity too low. But when treated with a hot aqueous solution of soda ash or caustic soda plus a borate compound, extensive chemical changes occur. Interchain linkages can be formed through borester anions, creating a more highly branched chain polymer with a higher molecular weight.
Adhesives are as diverse as the various materials they hold together. And because they are so central to the quality, safety and functionality of objects ranging from food packaging to airplanes, developing adhesives demands highly specific knowledge of different segments and processes. BASF Performance and Formulation Additives draws on specialized expertise in a broad spectrum of adhesives and applications. Our portfolio includes pressure-sensitive adhesives PSA and packaging, as well as excellent food-contact-compliant solutions. Companies in different industries profit from our support in developing innovative adhesives that contribute significantly to sustainability and efficiency, for example, by allowing cold-processing or reducing harmful emissions. Regardless of which application your adhesives are designed for, whether for industrial or consumer use, PSA, heat-curing or cold processing, we will partner with you to develop concepts that make a difference.
The present invention relates to a new silane formulation and to its use for moisture- crosslinking hybrid polymers. Hybrid polymers for adhesives and sealants, also called hybrid compounds below, are gaining increasingly in importance in the building industry and in other branches of industry.
