The relationship between religion and science is the subject of continued debate in philosophy and theology. To what extent are religion and science compatible? Are religious beliefs sometimes conducive to science, or do they inevitably pose obstacles to scientific inquiry? It studies historical and contemporary interactions between these fields, and provides philosophical analyses of how they interrelate. This entry provides an overview of the topics and discussions in science and religion.

Science and Religion: A Very Short Introduction

Neo-atheist Sam Harris alleges that the faith of Christian geneticist Francis Collins is unscientific :. James Watson, the co-discoverer of the structure of DNA, a Nobel laureate, and the original head of the Human Genome Project, recently [asserted] in an interview that people of African descent appear to be innately less intelligent than white Europeans. Francis Collins. Indeed, as philosophers Steven B. Cowan and James S. Spiegel observe: "Defining science is problematic, to say the least…".

Religious rituals and practices are studied in light of their impact on the human body. Students will also engage in Ignatian reflection on the relationships pertaining to religion, bodies, and the brain in the context of experiential learning. Religion, Bodies, and the Brain is a general education course for undergraduates interested in keeping science and the humanities in conversation with one another. The relationship between religion and science can then be critically examined. Simultaneously, we study some very basic principles of brain science. Having acquired some working knowledge of both religion and brain science, we will study recent attempts to use brain science to explain religion, particularly religious rituals and practices as a set of human behaviors shaping human lives. Students will thus become more adept at discerning the ongoing negotiations performed by people of faith as they situate themselves in societies where the authority of science holds sway.

Thomas Dixon. The debate between science and religion is never out of the news: emotions run high, fuelled by polemical bestsellers like The God Delusion and, at the other end of the spectrum, high-profile campaigns to teach "Intelligent Design" in schools. Yet there is much more to the debate than the clash of these extremes. As Thomas Dixon shows in this balanced and thought-provoking introduction, a whole range of views, subtle arguments, and fascinating perspectives can be found on this complex and centuries-old subject. He explores the key philosophical questions that underlie the debate, but also highlights the social, political, and ethical contexts that have made the tensions between science and religion such a fraught and interesting topic in the modern world. Dixon emphasizes how the modern conflict between evolution and creationism is quintessentially an American phenomenon, arising from the culture and history of the United States, as exemplified through the ongoing debates about how to interpret the First-Amendment's separation of church and state.

The debate between science and religion is never out of the news: emotions run high, fuelled by polemical bestsellers like The God Delusion and, at the other end of the spectrum, high-profile campaigns to teach 'Intelligent Design' in schools. Yet there is much more to the debate than the clash of these extremes. As Thomas Dixon shows in this balanced and thought-provoking introduction, many have seen harmony rather than conflict between faith and science. He explores not only the key philosophical questions that underlie the debate, but also the social, political, and ethical contexts that have made 'science and religion' such a fraught and interesting topic in the modern world, offering perspectives from non-Christian religionsand examples from across the physical, biological, and social sciences.. Along the way, he examines landmark historical episodes such as the trial of Galileo by the Inquisition in , and the famous debate between 'Darwin's bulldog' Thomas Huxley and Bishop Wilberforce in Oxford in The Scopes'Monkey Trial' in Tennessee in and the Dover Area School Board case of are explained with reference to the interaction between religion, law, and education in modern America.
